Lotus, the renowned British automaker famous for its lightweight sports cars, is breaking away from tradition with its newest model - the Eletre. Unlike any other Lotus car before it, the Eletre is a high-performance electric SUV set to be built in China and released in the United States in 2023. Despite its hefty battery pack making it significantly heavier than other Lotus models, the Eletre promises impressive acceleration thanks to its electric motors that will generate a minimum of 600 horsepower. The Eletre will compete with other electric SUV models such as the Audi e-tron and BMW iX, and its design resembles that of the Lamborghini Urus.
Lotus plans to offer the Eletre in three configurations: Base, S, and R, with a base price below $85,000. For maximum range, it's recommended to stick to either the base or S trim, both of which come with a 602-hp electric powertrain and an estimated driving range of around 315 miles per charge. The Eletre will feature a large 112-kWh battery that allows it to achieve a maximum range of 373 miles on the WLTP cycle, but this will likely be lower in the US EPA range and MPGe ratings. Rapid charging up to 350 kW will allow the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in only 20 minutes, enough to cover nearly 250 miles. The Eletre will also accept 22 kW AC charging.
The Eletre's dual-motor all-wheel drive base powertrain will deliver 602 horsepower, enabling the car to reach 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The top-spec R model will boast a massive 906 horsepower and a zero-to-62-mph time of only 2.9 seconds. While Lotus hasn't revealed anything yet about the Eletre's suspension or handling, it is expected to have the crisp handling and fun-to-drive nature that Lotus cars are known for. The Eletre's dimensions are anything but compact, measuring 200.9 inches in length, 87.8 inches in width (including door mirrors), and 64.2 inches in height on 20-inch wheels, with a wheelbase of 118.9 inches.
At launch, the Lotus Eletre will be available in Natron Red, Galloway Green, Stellar Black, Kaimu Grey, Blossom Grey, and Solar Yellow. There will also be six brake caliper color options. Once available, the Eletre will undergo a real-world 75-mph highway fuel economy-and-driving range test.
